In April 2014 the VDOT Hampton Roads District began the road smoothing I-64/I-264 pavement rehabilitation project. Our Public Affairs Team was engaged to help develop and execute a multi-level, comprehensive communications plan to keep the Hampton Roads community and stakeholders updated on project scope, impact, and timeline. The Public Affairs team’s main focus is the I-264 portion of the project, though the team helps communicate overall project updates as needed. The entire portion of the pavement rehabilitation project spans from I-64 at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel to the oceanfront via I-264 in Virginia Beach. A complex project, pavement rehabilitation on I-264 includes ramp and lane closures, detour navigation, possible weather constraints, and coordinated efforts with local on-going transportation projects, as well as working around ongoing community events and high volume traffic. The Public Affairs team helps communicate project updates and milestones to the media, stakeholders, and citizens that may be affected. This is accomplished through advisories, direct community outreach, paid media advertising, and earned coverage through social media.

Working on behalf of the VDOT Communications Department, we updated the public and navigates the PR of the Pavement Rehabilitation project through completion.
